Gitega city Burundi (formerly Kitega) is the Capital of Burundi Located in the center of the country, in the Burundian central plateau roughly 100 kilometers (62mi) East of Bujumbura (the largest city and former capital) Gitega (the second largest city) was the seat of the Kingdom of Burundi until its abolition in 1966. In late December 2018, Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he would follow on a 2007 promise to return Gitega to its former political capital status, with Bujumbura remaining as economic capital and centre of commerce. A vote in the Parliament of Burundi made the change official on 16 January 2019, with all branches of government expected to move in over three years.

Gitega being the second busiest town after Bujumbura, the town offers a range of activities and sites for tourist that would like to explore and discover the town of Gitega, some of the sites include;

National Museum

Opened in 1955, the Burundian National Museum presents exhibits related to Burundian royalty from the early 20th century, archaeological discoveries, everyday objects from jewelry to pots and spears, and coins from the colonial era.

Christ the King Cathedral

The Catholic cathedral and the seat of the Gitega Archdiocese is a religious place of worship that travelers can visit.

Gishora Drum Sanctuary

The site of the former royal court and royal residence houses karyenda drums. Back in the royal era, such drums were regarded as holy, played at rituals and notable events like royal coronations, funerals, and weddings, and otherwise closely guarded in these sanctuaries.

The central market is a huge market in Gitega where travelers can go see and interact with the local people on how they live on Agriculture

How to get Gitega city Burundi

Using a car, travellers can take a road trip of approximately 100 km (62mi) North of Bujumbura, the road trip can take 2-3 hours
